Hangfire Avalanche Training

Overview: Hangfire Avalanche Training's Avalanche Skills Training (AST) courses were developed out of the sheer need for an AST course that was snowmobile specific. Our vision was to develop an Avalanche Course that was rider orientated, with emphasis on safe terrain negotiation, rescue techniques, and hazard awareness on a snowmobile. Upon completion of our avalanche course you will have the skills necessary to perform a lead role in a rescue, be aware of hazards, gather information on safe trip planning and have a basic knowledge of avalanche formation and release. You also receive a Hangfire Avalanche Training AST level 1 certificate acknowledging you have completed your Avalanche Skills Training. We offer snowmobile AST courses in BC, AB and SK. For those who would like to split their course over two separate dates or locations, Hangfire Training offers you the option to take the classroom session first and your field day at a different time.

Topics covered: The Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 Course will provide entry-level decision-making framework that is based on the most advanced knowledge available. It is suitable for use by people with basic training and little experience. At the end of the course, students should be able to: Understand the basics of avalanche formation and release; Identify avalanche terrain; Know the steps required to plan and carry out a trip; Use the Avaluator as a decision-making tool in areas where trips are rated using the Avalanche Terrain Exposer Scale (ATES) and where Avalanche Danger Ratings and Avalanche Bulletins are available; Find resources for obtaining ATES terrain ratings if their trip is not rated; Find resources of obtaining Avalanche Danger Ratings and Avalanche Bulletins if these are not available; Use appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain; Carry out a companion rescue; and Understand the limits of their training.
